Antique Staffordshire Early Blue Transfer Ware John Rogers Chinese Fishing Pattern Sauce Tureen, Cover & Stand Under-Plate7¼” x 4” x 4¾” h on 6 ¾” x 5”, c. 1814-36.
Rectangular rounded edge shape with lion head handles & finial, ladle cut in cover.
Blue transfer Chinoiserie pattern of four figures at a river bank, two seated & two standing on early earthenware.
No mark; but Coysh,
Blue & White Transfer Ware 1780-1840,
p. 62, # 81, shows this sauce tureen with its very characteristic lions head handles & finial (in a
floral decorations from the border of the Zebra pattern) with the impressed mark ROGERS (of John Rogers & Son) & without the stand.
He dates it c. 1814-36.
Fine clean condition
. Fine glaze crazing & gathered bluing in the glaze sauce characteristic of pearl ware. No chips,
cracks, hairlines or repairs.
